FAQs on financing a company vehicle

Both finance and operational leases are long-term vehicle financing solutions based on leasing. What are the differences? With an operational lease, services are included and the purchase option works differently.

  • With an operational lease, you benefit from a range of services, including maintenance, repairs, insurance, registration and road taxes, roadside assistance, tyres and a replacement vehicle, which ensures peace of mind.
  • With a finance lease, however, you arrange these services yourself, giving you the freedom to choose your own providers.
  • Both may include a purchase option at the end of the contract. For a finance lease, the amount is fixed at the start. For an operational lease, this amount is usually defined at the end of the contract based on the market value, although a fixed amount can also be agreed in advance. A higher initial payment may also be possible.
  • Accounting: an operational lease is recorded 100% off-balance sheet as a business expense.
  • For a finance lease:
    • If the purchase option is below 15% of the vehicle’s purchase value, repayments are recorded on the balance sheet (except interest, which is recorded as an expense).
    • If it is above 15%, the payments are fully recorded as business expenses.

The differences relate to ownership, VAT financing and included services.

  • With a finance or operational lease, the leasing company is the legal owner. You can become the owner at the end by exercising the purchase option.
  • With instalment credit, you are the legal owner from the start. You must pay the full VAT upfront. With leasing, VAT is included in the lease payments and spread over time.
  • With an operational lease, the lease includes many services, such as insurance, taxes, maintenance, repairs and roadside assistance.

Financial renting is a type of car leasing.

It refers to a lease with a purchase option of more than 15% of the vehicle’s value. In this case, the payments are treated as business expenses and do not appear on the balance sheet. However, if the option is 15% or less, the cost is recorded on the balance sheet as depreciation.

BNP Paribas Fortis Finance Lease offers this off-balance sheet option for financing your company car.

An instalment credit allows you to finance a wide range of business vehicles, including:

  • Electric, hybrid and combustion vehicles, including cars, vans and motorcycles.
  • It can also be used for soft mobility vehicles such as e-bikes, scooters and monowheels.

Depending on your situation, you can finance charging points via an instalment credit (e.g. individual charging point) or an investment loan (e.g. multiple charging points).
