It took a good dose of courage - and perhaps a bit of audacity - for Sébastien Millecam to sell the BattleKart concept in 2014. With more than 50 centres open today, it’s clear that the company’s CEO was right. And he has no intention of stopping there. With BNP Paribas Fortis as a financial partner, the young entrepreneur is thinking big.
Karting boosted by augmented reality – and perhaps inspired by a famous video game – is the concept that sprang from the lively mind of Sébastien Millecam back in 2010, when he was still an engineering student. Five years and a few ups and downs later, the financing was secured and BattleKart became a reality.
Sébastien Millecam chose BNP Paribas Fortis to help him expand. "First and foremost for the interesting conditions, that's true," he smiles. "But also for the practicality of the tools provided. Easy Banking Business gives me a clear overview of my cash flow and makes it easy to carry out all my transactions.”
A relationship of trust was quickly established with his banking advisor, Pierre Decneut. "He was quick to embrace our unusual idea," explains Millecam. "The bank has been with us from the very first fundraising rounds, providing us with tailored solutions. This allowed us to open our first centres, buy offices, equipment, finance our stock, etc."
“Sébastien has a long-term vision and knows where he wants to go,” adds Decneut. "We were quickly won over by his business model.”
But the days when Mouscron was the only town with BattleKart are long gone. Now, some 50 centres have opened, some as branches but most as franchises – in Belgium, Germany, Austria, and even Saudi Arabia and Australia.
Sébastien Millecam’s ambition? "We plan to open 40 more centres this year, and build up to 160 openings per year. I think we could eventually reach 2,500 centres worldwide," he says.
This international expansion will obviously not happen without the help of BNP Paribas Fortis. “Being part of a large European group allows us to support BattleKart in this internationalisation,” says Decneut. "Knowing the local regulations, for example, is crucial when you want to set up abroad, and we're there to guide them. Working with such an ambitious customer is, of course, very motivating and a great responsibility.”
