Top Habitation Fire Insurance is a Belgian-law fire insurance policy for buildings and contents distributed by BNP Paribas Fortis. The policy is valid for 1 year, at the end of which it will be renewed by tacit agreement for the same period, except where it is cancelled at least three months before the renewal date. 

For a policy taken out or renewed by tacit agreement on or after 1 October 2024, you have until two months before the renewal date to cancel it. In addition, from the second year onwards, you can cancel the policy at any time. Cancellation will take effect at the end of a 2-month period starting the day after notice is given by registered mail or served upon us, or the day after we provide an acknowledgement of receipt.

Get discounts on your Top Habitation Insurance

If you take out a new Top Habitation policy on or before 31 December 2025, you may qualify for several discounts that can be combined, with the exception of the “Loyalty” and “Welcome gift” discounts, which cannot be combined".

Loyalty discount – 10%¹

Get a 10% discount for the full duration of your new policy², if you, your spouse or cohabiting partner has at least one of the following AG insurance policies active with BNP Paribas Fortis:

Welcome gift – 10%

Benefit from a 10% discount during the first year of your policy if you don’t meet the criteria for the loyalty discount².

EcoBonus – 10%

Receive a 10% discount for the entire duration of your new policy if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home, for example by installing solar panels, a heat pump or additional insulation. You can also benefit from this discount if your home has a green energy certificate (PEB A+, A or B in Wallonia and Flanders, and A, B or C in Brussels)¹.

Transparency

When you take out Top Habitation fire insurance, AG applies the principle that everything is covered unless specifically excluded.

Full compensation for damage

Your home is always insured at its current reconstruction value. Additional costs arising from compliance with new legal and regional standards will also be covered. You can also get 100% compensation even if your home is not rebuilt.

Repairs in kind

If AG considers that the circumstances of the claim allow it, you may be offered a repair in kind. In this case, AG will pay the full cost of repairing the damage: you won’t have to pay anything, not even an excess. The repair also comes with a six-month warranty. You always have the option to refuse the proposed repair in kind.

Cover away from home

If you're going on holiday with your car, and your boot is full of your personal belongings to ensure a pleasant stay abroad, it’s good to know that contents that you take temporarily away from home are covered worldwide!

Cover for rented properties

If you're renting a student room, a second home, holiday accommodation or a party venue, these are also covered. The fire insurance policy for your main residence covers you against damage to any of these buildings and their contents.

The scope of your cover

Fire insurance covers

damage to your home and its contents

  • fire, explosion and implosion, lightning, storm and hail, electrical events (short circuit etc.)

  • natural disasters (floods, including rainwater runoff, overflow and backflow of public sewers, earthquakes, landslides or subsidence)

  • water damage (including leak detection, pipe repair and dry rot treatment) and damage caused by heating oil

  • damage to the building through vandalism, malicious acts or acts committed by thieves, theft of parts of the building (solar panels, electric vehicle charging points etc.)

  • breakage of glass (windows, TV screens, solar panels etc.)

damage caused to third parties

  • material damage and physical injury caused to third parties by your home or its contents (building liability cover)

  • damage originating from your home or contents that extends and causes damage to others, such as a fire that spreads to a neighbouring house

24/7 assistance

  • assistance with damage covered by your insurance, along with urgent measures to limit the damage

  • coverage of certain urgent expenses to prevent the damage worsening, and other expenses such as the cost of temporary accommodation

Fire insurance does not cover

  • damage caused intentionally by the policyholder

  • damage to a dilapidated or condemned building

  • damage caused to motor vehicles (this refers to damage caused, among other things, to a vehicle, a scooter or a motorcycle with an engine of over 50 cm³/4kW)

  • damage caused by non-compliance with an obligation imposed in your insurance policy and concerning the insured property’s material condition or protection arrangement
