Wero will replace Payconiq in 2026. What will change for merchants?
5 min
Payconiq will disappear in 2026 and be replaced by Wero and Bancontact. For you as a merchant, little will change. Your payment terminal and QR code will continue to work as usual, customers will be able to pay in the same way, and the switch will happen automatically. In this article, you can read about what Wero is and what minor changes are coming.
What is Wero? The new European payment standard
Wero, an initiative of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is the successor to Payconiq and will become the new standard for QR payments in Europe. The payment solution is already available in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, and will soon be available in other countries as well.
Payconiq becomes Wero: what stays the same?
Payconiq and Payconiq GO will automatically transition to Wero or Bancontact payment solutions without any action required on your part. For you as a merchant, operations will remain the same:
- Your QR code will not change.
- No additional fees: the pricing conditions remain identical.
- To pay digitally, customers scan the QR code on the sticker, cash register, payment terminal, invoice, or smartphone.
- Customers pay as usual with Wero or Bancontact, their banking app, or the Bancontact app.
What will change in 2026?
From day 1: you will notice this change immediately
Payconiq payments will be replaced by Wero and Bancontact payments. Depending on the payment method chosen by the customer, you will receive payments via both channels using your existing QR code.
Changes during 2026
- Foreign customers can easily pay digitally using the QR code thanks to Wero's pan-European coverage.
- You will receive new marketing materials free of charge (the existing stickers will continue to work).
- Payconiq will disappear as a brand. 'Bancontact Payconiq Company' will become 'Bancontact Company'.
- The Payconiq GO app will be renamed Bancontact Pro (for merchants who enter amounts manually on a smartphone or tablet).
- The merchant portal will be replaced by Bancontact Pro.
