The future of electric (company) cars

3-5 min

Not only has the tide of mobility definitively turned, it’s also gathering steam (or should we say ‘voltage’?). Electric cars are becoming an increasingly common sight on our roads, and companies are offering their employees a variety of sustainable mobility solutions. Christophe Janssen, senior mobility expert and Head of Arval Consulting, looks at the present and future of the electric (company) car market.

A new mobility reality

The era of the ‘first adapters’ is over. The first wave of affordable electric cars has become a reality. The company car segment is driving the overall market, making prices more affordable. At Arval, specialists in guiding companies towards new mobility, Christophe Janssen, senior expert in mobility and Head of Arval Consulting, speaks with confidence on the subject. He is convinced that the combustion engine has started to sing its swan song: "In this respect, Belgium is playing a pioneering role. We are remarkably further ahead in the electric story than many other countries. At Arval, we see that the taxation policy the government is pursuing is really helping to steer that process in the right direction. Don't forget that this process is rapidly greening the Belgian vehicle fleet. 80% of the orders we received this year are for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). Our business managers make supporting customers – entrepreneurs and private customers – their daily priority. These positive incentives give them the tools they need to confidently guide their customers through the electric story."

To try an electric car is to love it

Today, that story is unfolding without the stumbling blocks it faced in the past. Christophe Janssen: "The new generation of electric cars is affordable and has finally done away with the 'range anxiety' of the past. When you get into your car and realise you can drive 700  kilometres, you can hit the road without a care in the world. Even with the new, smaller cars, you can easily cover 300 or 400 kilometres – how many of us drive that kind of distance every day? The charging infrastructure is fast and excellent – Arval itself contributes to making it even better every day. Finally, the total cost of ownership is visibly decreasing: less maintenance, less wear and tear, more options for less money... To try an electric car is to love it – that's today's reality."

Peace of mind through know-how

As a specialist in supporting companies with their mobility, Janssen sees an ongoing role for Arval in strengthening the electrification process: "That's because we understand and support the entire car cycle. This is the result of our many years of experience. The residual value of an electric car after the leasing period, for example, is an important factor for companies. This obviously involves a hidden risk, which Arval takes on. We take care of this for entrepreneurs and use all our know-how to guide them in choosing the right models, providing a clear cost picture and offering tax advice on greening their fleet."

A healthy mix of sustainability and value for money

Arval's leasing strategy aims for a healthy mix of sustainability and value for money. Christophe Janssen: "Every day, we strive to provide every customer with the maximum level of service at the most competitive price possible. This is now also possible in the electric journey – for us, this is excellent news. Special campaigns that we run with brands, such as the current one with Mercedes models, give our customers even more value for their budgets. Plus, the sustainability aspect adds a real positive drive to our story. In plain language: every diesel we replace with a clean BEV helps protect the environment. Today, with the entry-level models of many brands, we are writing a beautiful, affordable story based on sustainability."

Arval: a one-stop-shop for mobility

Finally, Janssen would like to draw attention to the mobility mix that Arval is bringing to the market: "At Arval, we have created a separate mobility department to guide our customers in this process. In this way, we are actually bringing the future to them today. As a one-stop shop for mobility, we realised long ago that our customers are no longer just concerned with a car and a fuel card, but with all possible mobility alternatives. The car will always remain a very important factor, but the countless companies we assist are noticing that their employees are really adapting their mobility to their professional and personal needs. Today, we travel using a mix of smaller or larger cars, shared cars, public transport, lease bikes, scooters... you name it. Creating a beautiful, balanced, easily adaptable and intelligently designed mix that entrepreneurs offer to their staff: that's what we do and what we will continue to do in the future."
