Kube ESG: sustainable reporting for SMEs
For many SMEs, sustainable business is no longer a theoretical concept, but a powerful driver of innovation and customer trust. Because European regulations for SMEs deliberately allow for a great deal of flexibility, this creates a unique opportunity for agile companies: to take the lead proactively in environmental, social and governance (ESG) areas.
Through Kube ESG, a joint market initiative of Febelfin, the 4 major banks and Isabel, SMEs get a clear, structured approach to converting their concrete sustainability performance into a tangible, professional report. In this way, they achieve ESG transparency at the level of multinational companies. The VSME standard for SMEs provides a European reference framework specifically tailored to unlisted companies.
An increasing number of business leaders take pride in their efforts in energy savings, local employment and transparent policies. The European Commission’s Kube ESG programme is designed to make this reality visible and realistic to customers, investors and partners.
Turning flexibility into a strategic advantage
Although the complex CSRD legislation applies mainly to large enterprises, clients and consumers also expect ever greater transparency from SMEs. Because they are not bound by rigid, uniform obligations, SMEs have the freedom to focus on what really matters to their business. The current European reporting rules also provide a voluntary framework for smaller companies outside the mandatory CSRD scope.
"SMEs are often already doing fantastic work on sustainability in the field, but sometimes lack the tools to present it in a structured way. With Kube ESG, we don't offer complicated control, but action-oriented leverage. This way, we bring together the vast majority of the necessary answers in one standardised report you can easily share with all your stakeholders."
Dieter Dirickx, Head of Sustainable Business Competence Centre at BNP Paribas Fortis
A programme tailored to your priorities and organisation
Kube ESG is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a modular programme that allows you to focus precisely on the sustainability themes that matter to your company. Furthermore, the workflow is designed to maximise time savings at management level. The legal representative does not need to collect the data themselves, but can easily delegate the task of completing the report digitally to an internal employee or sustainability officer. Only once the report is finalised does the legal representative retain final control for approval and sharing.
With Kube ESG, your organisation always retains full control over the data:
- Flexible delegation: the legal representative simply assigns the right colleague or expert to collect and input the data.
- Freedom of choice: you choose the level of support and the modules that align precisely with your sector and ambitions.
- Targeted support: you complete the process completely autonomously. For general questions, contact your relationship manager, while the specialised Isabel support team provides technical support for the Kube ESG portal.
- Smart reuse: the VSME report – the voluntary sustainability reporting standard for SMEs – is completed just once yet is multifunctional. You can easily reuse it for your own communications, commercial tenders, credit analyses or grant applications. The digital VSME statement explains how standardised ESG data can be exchanged more easily with financiers, investors and business partners.
- Digital authorisation: you decide when, whether and with which stakeholders, such as banks, customers and investors, to share the report.
Sustainability as a driver for growth
Sustainability is at its core a long-term vision. Companies that proactively invest in their energy transition and ESG strategy build operational resilience. By improving energy efficiency and financing it strategically, for example, they can lock in cost savings in the long term and protect the company against market volatility. According to the International Energy Agency, energy efficiency can help SMEs reduce energy costs and emissions while strengthening their resilience to price shocks.
"Sustainability is inextricably linked to a company's future-proofing," explains Dieter Dirickx. "Because we, as a bank, gain deeper insight into a company’s risk profile over the financing term, we are happy to work with companies that place sustainability high on the agenda. It's not an optional extra, but a long-term economic and operational foundation. By treating ESG criteria as a commercial asset rather than an administrative burden, SMEs strengthen their market position while reducing their operational risks. The result of the Kube ESG process is a clear, action-oriented report that strengthens your company’s reputation, attracts talent and can help open doors to sustainable financing solutions."
3 benefits of proactive reporting via Kube ESG
- Commercial advantage: stand out from competitors in tenders and large clients. European green procurement criteria show that verifiable environmental data can play an important role in procurement processes.
- Simplicity and structure: translate complex ESG topics into a clear and internationally recognised format. The OECD analysis of ESG reporting for SMEs links standardised reporting to improved access to financing, value chains and customer relationships.
- Full autonomy: you set your own pace, priorities and data-sharing terms on a voluntary basis. This enables you to substantiate sustainability claims and strengthen stakeholder trust, as outlined in the European Commission's guidance on green claims.
