The European direct debit

Previously, every country in Europe used one or more dedicated systems for domestic payments by direct debit. Rather than converting one of these national systems into a common system across all countries, a new product has been developed: the European direct debit, also known as the SEPA Direct Debit (SDD).

The European direct debit was introduced at the end of 2009. In Belgium, however, the law transposing the provisions of the European Payment Services Directive will not come into effect until 1 April 2010. This is therefore the date by which the current direct debit system (DOM80) must comply with European standards.
