Together, we are committed
Today we are facing many challenges, including pollution, climate change and certain commodities running out, to name but a few. In order to make positive changes to our world, we attach the utmost importance to ethics and social commitment. Socially responsible investments are one step in this direction. Discover our wide range of socially responsible investments that combine a positive impact on the environment and society with the quest for a potential return.
You can invest money and contribute to a more sustainable society at the same time.
Facing today's challenges and those of tomorrow
By 2030, our food needs will have increased by 35%. Our water and energy needs will have increased by 40% and 50% respectively. In parallel, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has shot up since the 1950s, with consequences for our climate. The challenges that face us are therefore numerous and significant in scale. This is why we want to be an actor for change and have put in place various initiatives. How?
By being a committed bank...
Our actions are centred around four main topics of responsibility:
... and thanks to socially responsible investments
Our socially responsible investments are selected by systematically using environmental, social and good governance criteria (also known as the ESG criteria) in addition to the traditional financial ones. Discover our two approaches.
Two approaches with the same aim
At BNP Paribas Fortis Private Banking, socially responsible investments are selected using two main approaches:
- The multi-sector best-in-class approach: investments in different sectors of the economy by selecting only the best with regard to the ESG criteria. This can lead to very significant impacts on entire sectors of activity, by putting pressure on companies to make changes on an environmental, social and governance level.
- The thematic approach: investments in targeted stakeholders of the economy that offer a practical solution to a social and/or environmental issue (for example, companies that work on access to water, recycling or renewable energy).
A return that matches up to your expectations
Only the companies that are best equipped to face the future are selected according to our SRI approach. This could be by reducing their energy costs, managing environmental risks or offering products and services that contribute to solving social or environmental issues. They therefore have every chance of performing as well as, or even better than, other companies. By meeting these criteria, these companies often enjoy a better reputation and greater staff motivation, which also tends to improve their results. Investing in a socially responsible manner certainly does not mean giving up on good potential financial performances. Since its creation in 1990, the oldest SRI index in existence (the FTSE KLD 400) has almost systematically outperformed its traditional counterpart, the S&P 500 index composed of the 500 largest American companies on the basis of their market capitalisation (source: Bloomberg). Past returns do not guarantee future performance.
The King Baudouin Foundation as a preferred partner
In 2015, BNP Paribas Fortis Private Banking formed a partnership with the King Baudouin Foundation. This organisation works on issues such as poverty, health, talent development and social commitment.
A growing success
The socially responsible investments that BNP Paribas Asset Management distributes are experiencing strong growth.
At the end of 2016, BNP Paribas Asset Management was managing around EUR 25 billion of assets in its sustainable funds alone. Over the period 2013-2017, the assets under management at BNP Paribas Fortis in SRI funds increased sevenfold. BNP Paribas Fortis is therefore the market leader in socially responsible investments.
