Sign your contracts securely!

Are you short of time? Do you want to sign your contracts securely without having to leave the house? Then the electronic signature of BNP Paribas Fortis is a solution for you!

What is an electronic signature?

An electronic or digital signature is the electronic version of a handwritten signature: it is electronic data associated with a digital document. With electronic signatures, we can now digitally sign documents that we had to handle in hard copy before. An electronic signature guarantees the contents of a document and the identity of the signatory through a digital certificate.

How does it work?

Today it is already possible to use your bank card and card reader to authorise payment orders or apply for products through Easy Banking Web or the Easy Banking App. With the same bank card and card reader, you can now also sign documents electronically or digitally.

The procedure is as follows:

  • First, the document will be presented to you.
  • You then confirm the content of the document through the M2 key on your card reader.
  • BNP Paribas Fortis generates the electronic signature for the document through a digital certificate.
  • You confirm your signature to indicate that you agree to the binding nature of the electronically signed document.
  • Finally, you can download the signed document and save it.

It is that simple!

Why sign electronically?

The advantages speak for themselves: you sign securely wherever and whenever you want. The contract is binding for all parties and will save you time and money. It is also easily done from home.

Signing documents or contracts is legally binding. Naturally, the certificate follows a strict and secure procedure.

This procedure guarantees confirmation of your identity and that the substance of the document or contract remains the same for all parties.

You can always check the individual terms and conditions of the certificate. The technical details of the certification procedure is described below.

Technical information

BNP Paribas Fortis uses the international standard “PKI - Public Key Infrastructure” for electronic signatures:

  • Within the BNP Paribas Fortis PKI, the Certificate Authority (CA), ’BNP Paribas Fortis Ephemeral Certification Authority’, generates digital certificates for BNP Paribas Fortis customers.
  • The Certificate Policy (CP) both describes and is applicable to any context in which the CA certificates are issued.
  • The CP is always provided in advance and you can consult it here at any time.

The Certificate Policy describes the precise conditions for generating certificates. Only the identified client may authorise the generation of a certificate or the creation of a digital signature for a specific document. To ensure the integrity of the document provided by BNP Paribas Fortis, it will be sealed in advance. This is why the name ”BNP Paribas Fortis Customer Ephemeral Certification Authority" (signature) and the name ”BNP Paribas Fortis eSeal 1" (seal) is featured in the certificate details, which can be accessed via the 'signature panel' of the PDF reader you use to open the signed document.

Certificates

Each certificate is part of a certificate chain, a hierarchical structure in which a certificate is issued by a higher-level “Certificate Authority”. This is always done in a secure manner.

This ensures that certificates for signing and sealing are published in a highly secure and trusted manner. Information on the hierarchical structure can be found in the details of the certificate. The table on the right describes the certificate chain and the “Certificate Policy” applicable to every level.
