Complete security with PSD2
PSD2: more security for your online purchases
Technology has evolved and so have our consumer habits. We buy, order, book... more and more online.
You may be wondering, are my payments secure enough? Online payments and their security are governed by the Payment Services Directive, or PSD2, the European directive for payments in European online shops.
Your payments on European websites
Laws to protect you
When you buy a product or service online with your debit or credit card from a merchant in the European Economic Area, you are protected by European regulations. These laws make it easy to make payments online and, in some circumstances, without authentication.
If these circumstances are not met, you will have to prove that it is you. To this end, PSD2 introduced strong authentication, or two-factor authentication.
Depending on the situation, you should identify yourself by combining two of these three characteristics:
- something you know, like your PIN;
- something you own, for example your bank card, card reader or smartphone;
- a unique biological identification feature, such as your fingerprint, facial recognition etc.
Securing your online purchases outside Europe
Your payments on foreign websites
For non-European websites and with a few exceptions, such as small amounts, monthly subscriptions etc., the two-factor authentication rule will not apply and you will still be able to pay online with your card number and CVV code (the three-digit code on the back of your credit card).

Other payment methods
It is also possible to pay for your purchases online without entering your bank details. To ensure secure payments on the Internet, various online payment systems have been created. For example, PayPal, iTunes, etc.
To use them, you must create an account independent of your bank account. You can then link the payment platform account to your bank account or fund it with your debit and/or credit card, by taking advantage of the security features provided by your bank. Payments are then made with a username and password.
In physical shops or online, you can now pay without even having to take out your card, either by scanning a QR code or by bringing your smartphone (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Payconiq by Bancontact, etc.) or your connected watch (Garmin, Fitbit, etc.) close to the terminal.
What about security? Confirmation methods such as using your PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition are usually required. For double security, activate the lock system on your smartphone. In addition, your bank details are never passed on during these payments.
