IBAN

The European bank account number, or IBAN (International Bank Account Number), facilitates cross-border money transfers.

One account number within the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area)

The arrival of IBAN account numbers was closely linked to the creation of the SEPA. Within the area, all transfers in euros can be carried out via a method similar to that used in one's country of origin. International payments made within the SEPA are now easier and completely secure. In Belgium, an IBAN now has 16 characters. It is printed on your bank statements, as well as on your debit card.

In Belgium, the IBAN is composed of the following:

  • The country code, which in this case is BE;
  • Two check digits;
  • The 12 digits of your account number.
